This week, we have been working with lines. We learned there are many different kinds of lines and many ways to orient them in artwork.
Pre-K through 1st grade read Harold's Circus by Crockett Johnson after exploring some of the different kinds of lines on our "Lots of Lines" poster below:
Students were asked to pay attention to the drawings in the story and see how many different kinds of lines they could find. After the story, we stood up and "drew" the lines on the floor with our bodies and feet. It was lots of fun! (Especially the "bunny hop line" and the "tip toe" line). Students then went to tables and used yarn and Twisteez wire to explore how to make some of the lines we discovered.
Finally, they all worked together to draw large, bright, beautiful posters with lots of lines in many different directions! As one of my pre-K kiddos said, "This was the best day EVER!"
2nd through 5th grade created these super awesome line collages. After learning that a collage is an image made of glued parts on a new piece of paper, students learned about various lines and the three main directions for lines: vertical (up and down), horizontal (side to side), and diagonal (corner to corner). They drew lines of their choosing on strips of colorful paper with Sharpie and then cut around the lines to free them from the paper. Students were encouraged to focus on color choices and placement of their lines on the paper. They were required to use five or more lines and to use all directions in their collage.
I just discovered your blog and absolutely LOVE the way you've taught line. I especially adore the collages and will use this lesson for sure. Now I'm going to explore the rest of your blog. Come visit mine at http://plbrown.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting and for the kind words! I am glad to share my lessons and I am very glad you will be trying out the collages! They are such a great way for students to feel lines as they are cut from paper. Enjoy! I will love to see the ones you all create, too!
