These multimedia panda and bamboo collages were inspired by Chinese New Year.
Materials Needed (Day 1):
Sulphite drawing paper
Artstraws or other paintable paper tubes
Permanent markers
Black watercolor
Brushes
Photos of pandas and bamboo
On the first visit, students drew a panda from observation with permanent marker. I instructed them to scribble color the areas that were black on the panda and then paint on top with black watercolor.
Next, they painted two Artstraws green for the bamboo. This became a community supply.
Materials Needed (Day 2):
12 X 18 Black sulphite paper
Oil pastels
Gluesticks
Scissors
White glue (or gel glue is better)
Painted Artstraws
Green tissue paper cut into rectangles
Students cut and pasted their panda off center onto black paper. Using oil pastels, they were instructed to draw an environment with simple lines and minimal color for their panda.
They then cut the Artstraws into small segments and glued into formation to create sticks of bamboo. They were allowed to have the bamboo go any direction they wanted and branch.
Finally, we folded the green tissue paper in half and formed bamboo leaves by "drawing with the scissors." They were folded and then glued with the white glue for a cool finishing touch.
I love the pandas!!! Great Idea
