This was a very simple but beautiful project I did with my Pre-K through 1st graders this week. We called them "firework flowers" after a few students in different classes commented on how these reminded them of fireworks.
Materials:
colored sulphite construction paper*
oil pastels
permanent marker
watercolor markers
construction paper crayons
*I chose dark blue for night and sky blue for day. Students can self-select or you can assign a color for each table.
Procedure:
1. Students were instructed to draw 5 dots across the paper at different heights.
2. They then drew vertical lines from the dot to the bottom edge of the paper and created leaves.
3. We practiced drawing a squiggle zigzag line in the air from left to right. Then I had them draw an imaginary dot in the air and make that same zigzag line in a circle around the dot.
4. I encouraged them to blend different colors together as much as possible by layering markers and/or oil pastels with crayon.
Art Teacher Thoughts:
I really enjoyed the simplicity of this lesson and the beautiful results the students achieved by blending colors together. A lot of the flowers appear to have dimension. They really enjoyed the magic of turning a zigzag line into a flower. (I got lots of "ooh's and aah's" when we did the step-by-step). It was a great review of color mixing, an introduction to color blending, and also a great Springtime project!
