Line Birds by PK-1st Grades

These whimsical birds created by PK-1st grades were a fun way to review lines, directions, color, and texture.

Lesson Activity: I had the Pre-K and K students pretend to be birds and fly in the path of the various lines. LOTS of fun! Flying in zig zags and curly lines was really fun to watch. During our lesson, I taught them the "Diagonal Disco" (a little dance where you point from corner to corner). They loved it! We also reviewed what horizontal and vertical (from the sky to the ground) meant.

Materials:
Bird tracer
Colored sulphite construction paper (full size sheets and also some strips)
Scissors
Glue sticks
Permanent markers
Oil pastels
Feathers
White glue

Procedure:
1. Students traced and cut a bird shape out of their choice of colored construction paper.
2. They then drew various types of lines; curly, zig zag, straight, scribble scrabble, wavy, etc. I encouraged them to draw lines in many different directions as we discussed in the lesson.
3. Older students drew lines on construction paper strips and then cut them out along the contours of the line. They then glued them onto the bird's body.
4. We drew eyes and the beak (a capital T on its side) and added color.
5. The finishing touch was gluing two real feathers on the tail of the bird.
