Recent Drawing Projects

These are still life resist paintings created by 2nd-5th grades. I had some awesome still life objects: snail shells, shoes, silverware, a cornucopia, artificial flowers, glass jars, and a King Tut mask.

I had the students draw the objects from observation using all cool or all warm colors with oil pastels. I had them use a different color than the outline to fill in the object. They then painted with warm/cool watercolor washes.

I love how beautifully these turned out! We squeezed them into one class period, which was rushed. I recommend doing over two sessions!

These were inspired by an anonymous drawing I found online of an owl filled completely with patterns.

I had the students choose an animal from a list we brainstormed as a class before starting the project. I posted several types of drawing marks: hatching, cross hatching, stippling, etc. as well as some icons, hearts, stars, etc. I instructed them to use different kinds of marks to represent the animal's fur, feathers, or scales.

This was actually one of the first monochrome drawing projects we have done. I do love color, but these were a great, simple one session lesson about line and contrast.

I love this mohawked dino lizard!
