These great abstract collages were a terrific lesson on line, direction, composition, and the contrast between regular and irregular shapes.
Materials Needed:
Liquid watercolor (we used metallic and neon colors)
White sulphite drawing paper
Oil pastels
Scissors
Circle tracers (lids)
White glue
Large colored sulphite construction paper
Procedure:
Day 1
1. Students create an original composition drawing various lines in a variety of directions with oil pastels.
2. Students then paint a variety of lines on top of their drawing. (*This was good practice with brushstroke).
Day 2
1. Students were introduced to the concept of regular and irregular shapes.
2. Students cut a large irregular shape out of 12 X 18 construction paper. (*I had them draw four different lines in each corner and then cut them out.)
3. We used the prior week's painting and traced and cut out circles of various sizes. Students were instructed to make a minimum of 3 large and 3 smaller circle, although some students did more:
4. Students stacked the circles on top of each other and glued them to the irregular shape.
5. Finally, students drew various lines to connect the circles in the composition and added a blended oil pastel border (optional).
