In October, my 5th grade students took a wonderful field trip to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Glassell Junior School of Art. Over two days, the students viewed works in the art museum with instructors from the Glassell and then went to the studio to make works inspired by the experience. Our two main themes were Landscapes and Mask Making: Identities Hidden and Revealed.
The first day, my group worked with Mr. Fulton from Glassell. We viewed a number of landscape paintings and then created these amazing watercolor resists.
The second day, we worked with Ms. Lopez-Poirot and viewed a large number of symbolic masks in the MFAH's amazing African art collection. The students then worked on these wonderful paper collage relief masks.
If you are in the Houston area, I cannot recommend this field trip series enough. The students learned so much from the experience and are still inspired by the visit. So many of them had never been to the art museum and it was a great pleasure to get to take them for their first visit.
