Heart Pop Art Collages

The Dragons have been hard at work on some really fun projects.

These are heart collages inspired by the work of Jim Dine, American Pop Artist b. 1935. We learned that pop art is a type of artwork using objects that are already familiar to most people. We also briefly learned about pop artist Andy Warhol and viewed his dollar sign silkscreens as well as the famous soup can paintings.

In the process of discussion, we learned that the symbol of a heart is widely recognized and easily understandable by many in our culture as a symbol of love, happiness, caring, and friendship. Taking that idea, we then created a pop art collage using inspiration from the paintings of Jim Dine.

First, we learned that a collage is an image created by gluing objects or paper onto a paper or cardboard backing. These can be found or created objects.

Next, the students created several hearts from tracers on their choice of papers and then created a wild and fun scribble drawing on a larger rectangular piece.

The next visit to the art room, we assembled the collage using tons of fun crafting materials and recycled items in huge collage bins. It was a fun and very free project and it yielded some beautiful and compositionally awesome collages. The room was abuzz with activity, kids' reggae music, and fantastic art making! I notice how each collage is unique to the students' personalities--some are very organized, some more playful, some with detailed stories that go along with them.

It was an amazing project! Collages are always great fun and very accessible!
