Lucky Money Envelopes by 2nd Grade

In celebration of Chinese New Year, the second graders created these awesome lucky money envelopes. They were super easy to create and only took one class period!

Materials:
Red paper cut into long 4" wide strips
Gold metallic watercolor
Permanent marker
Oil pastels
Chinese calligraphy examples
Glue sticks

Procedure:
1. Show students examples of lucky money envelopes like the ones below.

Mention the variety of designs on them, such as children, dragons, koi fish, and other geometric designs.
2. Have students glue the long edges of the red rectangular paper but not the short ends (so the envelope can open).
3. Students can draw Chinese symbols on their envelope with permanent marker. A lot of them chose to write their own special messages. They then drew a design of their choice (many of them liked the koi fish!) and colored them with oil pastels.
4. The last step was to trace the Chinese symbols with gold metallic watercolor.
