Pandas!

This is step one of a two day panda project the third graders are completing in honor of Chinese New Year. These pandas came out so great I just had to share! Next step will be to create a multimedia bamboo forest...

  1. I love the simplicity of the black and white so much! Really speaks to Chinese art. Can you tell me more about how you had the kids sketch the pandas or the lesson if you have time? I won't be back at school for a little while but I love this and will have to file it away for later!

  2. Sure! I would say I am very much a "shape-by-shape" type of teacher. I discuss the roundness of the panda's body and we name shapes that correspond to the various body parts--face, muzzle, ears, overall body form, legs, etc. I then do an example drawing from observation, "thinking aloud" to them as I draw and then have them draw one of the pandas from the nature photos I found online. The students have become really good at "looking carefully" while they draw!
