Fun Summer Projects

Here are a few of my favorite summer projects from The Glassell Junior School at The Museum of Fine Arts Houston. I taught a monster art class as well as multimedia for pre-K and kindergarten students.

"Abstract Leaves" Glue and Chalk Drawings
Students drew line drawings of overlapping jungle leaves. They painted them with watercolor. When dry, we used white glue on the background and rubbed in various colors of chalk pastel.

"Going on A Picnic" Collage
The students created a line drawing of favorite foods they would like to take on a picnic. We used watercolor to paint them and then created a "picnic blanket" by drawing squares in oil pastel on another page. When dry, the students cut and glued the "foods" on top of the "blanket."

Magic Dinosaur Eggs
These were created out of a simple paper armature (a wadded up ball of newspaper wrapped in masking tape) that we then covered with several layers of art paste and newspaper strips. Art paste was a great choice as the students all commented that it reminded them of "monster goo." I encouraged the students to use lots of unusual colors and patterns to decorate these when they were dry. Lots of fun!

Monster Arms
Hooray for wearable art! The students loved this project and it was a lot of fun to see them wearing these clever monster arms. The students drew a simple line drawing with permanent marker and then used oil pastels and watercolor to create a resist on both sides.

  1. I love Art Paste. My students call it "dog drool". Another blogger once posted that her kids call it "pig snot". Any product with that many gross-out names must be good!!
