Paintings in the Style of Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000)
The second and third grades learned about the colorful cityscapes of Harlem Renaissance artist Jacob Lawrence.
In response to his work, the students created cityscapes that reflect their neighborhood communities. The criteria were that they had to include signs seen in their communities, they had to use bright colors, and try to use overlapping and cropping to create the illusion of perspective. This was an early exploration of perspective for many of them. I love the colorful, bold buildings and signs in these pieces. They even have a graffiti art type quality to them as well.
