Animal Portraits

The pre-K through second grade drew animal portraits this week. We talked about the last time we made a portrait and discussed the meaning of the word. We determined it was a picture of something. We also remembered that we made self-portraits--or pictures of ourselves.

Students drew their animal of choice from imagination or from observation based on animal pictures in our classroom using oil pastels. We used Crayola Watercolor Pencils for the backgrounds and were encouraged to color using lines that were big and shaped differently, like zig zags or curly shapes. The last step was to wash the pencil marks with water to create the effect of watercolor paint and even some areas of resist!

There were so many different animal choices that the students selected! Everything from insects to birds to mammals, to zoo animals, domestic animals, and reptiles. They really enjoyed this drawing and painting multimedia lesson.
