The Pre-K and Kindergarten grade made these adorable ceramic snakes for our first clay project. I chose snakes for several reasons: they are easy to form, they are actually a coil and will be useful to them later on, and snakes have a huge variety of designs, colors, and textures.
I prefer Amaco White Art Clay. It fires at cone 05 and comes out as a soft, white, smooth bisque that is very easy to work with. The students used various texture tools including my personal favorite--burlap!
These pieces have also been glazed with a terrific glaze called Mayco Stroke and Coat Glazes. I LOVE them! The colors come out true to life and they are mixable!
My older students have been working on pinch pots and some awesome ceramic food sculptures a la Claes Oldenburg. They are glazed and waiting to be fired as I type. Here is a sneak preview below:
