Line Sculptures

In one of our first discussions about elements of art, we learned about lines. After viewing works by Wassily Kandinisky, Alexander Calder, Joan Miro, and Jean Dubuffet, we determined that there are many different types of lines...perhaps an infinite number...and then created a line sculpture. We took a flat, 2-D piece of paper, drew a line near the top and cut it away to create negative space. Then, we drew as many different types of lines as we could imagine, and finished the project by creating a 3-D sculpture that could be seen in the round. The kids really responded to the change in a flat 2-D image to one you could hold in your hands and rotate. The lines went from ones that began and ended, to ones that went on forever and ever!
